Reminder About Morning Drop- Off Procedures

Francis Wyman School has many complications when it comes to traffic flow, especially during morning drop-off at the back of the building. I work directly with Officer Schipelleti to determine the safest course of action given the particular variables. It is important to understand that the purpose of allowing parents to pull up along the sidewalk to drop students off is to facilitate an expedient process. If you need to assist your child getting out of the car, we ask that you park in the parking lot and walk your child to the building. Cars should stay in line as they move to exit the area and should not pull out of line to pass the cars in line as this is not safe.

The morning drop -off period is from 8:20 to 8:30. At 8:30 duty teachers need to go to their classrooms. After 8:30 parents need to park and walk their child/children into the building using the back door entrance. If a student arrives after 8:35, then the parent needs to walk into the building through the back door entrance and sign their child in at the office as the child is tardy. The back door entrance is locked soon after 8:35, but there is a buzzer system at the door that will allow the door to be unlocked by the office staff.

After February vacation, all students being dropped-off will enter the building through the back door entrance. Entering the building through the gym will no longer occur and the doors will be locked. Entering through the gym was a measure put into place in anticipation of snowy and icy walkways. Since the weather has been good, we will be directing students to enter through the back door entrance. This change does not impact the drop-off car line as students will simply walk along the sidewalk, up the Reading Garden walkway, and proceed to the back door entrance.

Cars are not allowed to come into the front parking area in the morning as long as the “Do Not Enter” sign is placed in the middle of the driveway. The sign is in the driveway from about 8:00 to 9:00. Only school personnel and people who require handicapped parking are allowed into this area in the morning. The sign is removed around 9:00 AM and after that the front parking area is open to visitors.

I will continue to work in conjunction with Officer Schipelleti. We understand that there can be times when people may not understand the process, so I encourage everyone to listen to the duty teachers as they are there to help guide the process. I also ask parents for their support and patience as all these procedures are in place for the safety of our students.

The following is a copy of what is in the school handbook regarding morning drop-off. The handbook is found on the school website www.bpsk12.org under the “About Us” tab. There is also a map in the handbook for you to reference.

Parent Drop Off/Pick-Up – “Walkers”
A.M. Drop-Off (8:20 – 8:30am) - will occur in the back of the building. All cars entering school grounds to drop off students will go to the back of the building around the parking lot and pull along the sidewalk parallel to the gym and Reading Garden. The students will disembark along the sidewalk and enter the school through the doors at the end of the Reading Garden walkway and gym doors. Please pull cars all the way up to the corner. For safety, obey teachers directing you and your child. The cars will then exit the parking lot the way they entered into the parking lot, continue down to the second right between the islands in front of the building and exit left to Terrace Hall Ave. Please see the map.
After 8:30am, once duty teachers go inside, parents must park and walk their children to the main office. The back entrance may be used.
